What I’m reading & a recipe

Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

[It is] as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?

The measure thereof [is] longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

From Job Ch. 11

Finally, we have a rainy, dreary day. I am loving it, I tell ya. It has been a super long time in coming. I think it was mid August when we last had just a day’s long rain. I plain to stay in my pajamas (I always say that, but end up changing for fear that someone will come by or that I will get too *lazy*…;) as long as possible and I look forward to some baking (I’ve already done some this morning) and reading. Speaking of reading, I keep an ever-growing list of books that I want to read. Do you? I love Amazon’s recommended reading list that it makes for me based on the books I’ve purchased in the past. So, being frugal and all, I use the Amazon list, go to my fabulous library, and if they don’t have the book, they get it loaned from another library. If funds are holding you back from reading, then try the library!

I cannot tell you how reading books has changed our lives, my life. I have truly learned (and am ever learning) how to be a better wife, mother, how to be creative, how to build a better relationship with the Lord, how to be healthier, how to cook better, etc., just through BOOKS! If you don’t read, please try it! The Lord does use books. I’m a believer. You could try one chapter per night as a starting point.

Yesterday, I picked up these books from my ever-growing list:

created for work I have flipped through this book and it looks super interesting. I hope this book will motivate and encourage me in my quest for helping my kids love to work as unto the Lord.

070909-handmade-homeWell, Christmas is in 54 or so days and I had better get busy on my homemade gifts, eh? I have *so many* gift ideas running around in my head. I can’t wait to get started. This book is so fun to look at. Her pictures are great, the projects look easy and fun AND she loves all things natural, as I do. She even has instructions for baby slings, mama cloth pads, and cloth diapers! I may have to *steal* this one from the library! :) :)

already gone This book, Already Gone, Why your kids will quit church and what you can do to stop it, by Ken Ham & Britt Beemer, is a very serious book. I am into the 2nd chapter already and it is a must read for you if you want your kids to stay in church. I’m sure I will be telling you more about this book as I read more.

I have started making our own cereal and LOVE it. For a family of six, one box of cereal will last about 5 minutes…:). I made a batch of granola this morning and it has filled our tummies, not broke the bank, and is very healthy. Here is my recipe, adapted from an Amish cookbook of mine:

Breakfast Cereal

5 cups quick-cook oatmeal

1c brown sugar

1/2 cup honey or light corn syrup (honey is healthier, but corn syrup might be more available to you)

1 cup flax seeds (can buy this at Wal-mart…VERY fibrous and healthy)

1 cup coconut, raisins, almonds, dried fruit (can vary this…)

1/4 tp. cinnamon

2 tp. vanilla (always use pure vanilla…don’t even buy the imitation..why would anybody use something that said, imitation??)

1/2 tp. salt

late oct 042

Directions: Put all dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Sprinkle vanilla and honey over mixture. Mix well. Pour into shallow pans (I use my pizza pan). Toast at 200 degrees for 20-30 minutes (usually takes mine about 40 minutes). Store in a tight container when cool. Serve with milk.

*The granola will still be sort of soft when it comes out of the oven. Don’t worry, it will get a bit crunchy as it cools! :) Also, wait until it cools to eats it in milk or your milk will get warm. Unless…you like that sort of stuff. Not me. :)

This lasts us a couple days, but it will probably last you longer. We have been known to be caught with our hands in the *granola* jar at weird times in the day. :)

Have a blessed day. I have the candles lighted, the lights low, the kids are quiet at the table doing their schoolwork (diligently…of course *no one* has promised them a movie for later..:), the wee one is napping, and I now have straightening to do. I must get out and about to have my clothes dried since our dryer needs a new belt and we have been lazy about it since the days have been pretty enough to hang out clothes and since, well, hey, I just love hanging out clothes anyway, but I *would* rather not do it in the rain!!

Now that I’ve made the run-on sentence for the day, I’ll go now. Here’s hoping that you’re having a rainy day as well. That is, if you want one.

  2. Thanks, Monica!

Ken Ham speaks at our church every August. What he has to say is staggering and true. We (as a family and the church) are taking heed. Can't wait to take a field trip to the Creation Museum when the girls are older!
